Morocco: Freedom in the Artisanal

We’ve just finished presenting the FW15 collection and it desperately makes me want to return to Morocco, which provided so much inspiration for the season.

The abundance of artistry we experienced — hand-woven rugs around every turn, mocassins being sold in the markets, beautifully presented tagines at dinner — spurred a collection rife with craft techniques like handmade tassels and multi-strand necklaces strung with thousands of beads:

We’re so grateful to Electric Feathers for loaning their spectacular clothing for this shoot and to our awesome team (our photographer, Jason; Gabriella our beautiful model, and Victor who turned her into a Moroccan princess!)

The dusty pathways of Marrakech’s markets dotted with vendors selling spices and crafts informed the season’s palette. Terra-cotta red, cinnamon, and turquoise have been on my mind, as have the stunning mosaic tiles that lined the riads… The city had such an influence on me and the collection!:

I’m dying to get back to Marrakech as soon as possible (it’s a very easy flight from Paris) to shop the markets and explore the nearby Atlas Mountains. Some insider tips if you’re visiting:

Shop at:
Soufiane (
13 Souk des Tapis) for rugs and home goods, run by the very friendly brothers Ismail and Soufaine.

Shop some more at:
Al Matjar Bazar
This is where we found the best rugs and spent hours negotiating!

Dine like a diva at:
Dar Moha, the former residence of Balmain. Opt to sit outside by the stunning pool and enjoy the set Moroccan menu.

Get your ice coffee in the souks at:
Le Jardin:
Gorgeous green tiling and one of the few places we found ice coffee … necessary & refreshing!

Get your design fix at:
El Fenn Riad. Owned by Vanessa Branson (that’d be Richard’s sister), and known for its stuning decor.

Get out of the hustle and bustle at:
The Beldi Country Club. 
One of the highlights of our trip,  the hotel, spa, and restaurant is located about half an hour outside of Marrakech and features beautiful grounds and heavenly spa service… Have lunch by the pool for the ultimate in relaxation.

Get your horticulture fix at:
Majorelle Garden:
 Belonged to Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, and features an electrifying cobalt blue paint job and a notable collection of plants and cacti from around the world.

Come hungry and Experience authentic cuisine at:
Al Fassia
