This past winter, Kathryn & I traveled with our significant others, brother, & mom (in honor of her 60th!) to East Africa. The trip was spectacular and heavily informed my FW17 designs. Thank you to our brother, Alex, for so many incredible photos.
The vast landscapes, extraordinary colors, otherworldly light, and wild animals provided the fodder every designer dreams of.
We departed from vibrant Nairobi and landed on a dirt airstrip in Kalama. From here we drove to Samburu Game Reserve (and stayed at the remote Larsens Camp).
From there, we headed to the famed Maasai Mara, where we stayed at the Fairmont Mara Safari Club. I fell in love with the vast plains of the Maasai Mara and the spectacular herds that inhabited them.
From Kenya, we flew in another tiny (15 seater!) plane to Tanzania, where we visited our favorite – and most remote – destination: The Serengeti Migration Camp.
Our final stop was the Manor Ngorongoro situated in Tanzania’s Great Rift Valley, next to the Ngorongoro Crater, known as “The Cradle of Life”. We fell in love with the design of the lodge (and their coffee!) and with the exquisite birds we saw in the crater.
Our time in Africa was so special. Humbling and inspiring. The light across the plains felt different than any light I had seen before and it was incredible to be in the presence of such powerful animals.
I am so grateful for this trip and the fuel it provided for my FW17 designs, which feature silk fabric flowers, oversized baroque pearls, and lots of statement earrings. Shop it now!
